Telemedicine to be Offered Inside Walmart

BCS Global Networks announced late last month that it will partner with Telemed Ventures to deliver "an innovative managed visual collaboration solution to Walmart’s Retail Medical Clinics." The announcement says that Telemed Ventures will operate the service under the retail brand Smart Care Doc™.  No details were provided on when the service will become available or in which stores.

"Video stations setup within the clinics enable patients to virtually conduct interactive doctor
and specialist visits," says Clive Sawkins, CEO of BCS Global. "The service is designed to promote the effective utilization of healthcare resources in a cost-effective manner and increase patients? access to healthcare professionals."

Telemedicine inside Walmart stores is not new. In August of 2008 a story ran in this publication on a partnership between MyHealthyAccess, an early retail clinic operator, and NuPhysicia, a telemedicine venture that started at University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Those two companies operated telemedicine clinics inside Houston Walmart stores in Houston for less than a year.

New clinic openings in Walmart have all but stopped since the company issued an RFI last November seeking partners to help build a primary care offering.
