More Moves By Major Urgent Care Players
|
July was an instructive month for those looking for evidence of the changing face of urgent care in the United States. Two major players announced moves that create significant changes in their futures.
CareSpot, the new name for Solantic Urgent Care, announced on July 17 that the company is forming a joint venture with HCA’s TriStar Health to bring as many as 15 urgent care centers to Middle Tennessee, opening throughout 2013. The new partnership would make CareSpot and TriStar Health the leading urgent care provider in Middle Tennessee. No doubt there will be more to report on this partnership in the coming months. CareSpot/Solantic is owned by the private equity firm of Welsh Carson Anderson and Stowe in New York City.
On July 26, Philadelphia-based private equity firm LLR Partners and Indianapolis-based Wellpoint announced a “growth capital investment” in Physicians Immediate Care. Wellpoint is the largest health insurance company in the United States. LLR Partners is a middle-market private equity firm best known for its investment in Medmark Specialty Pharmacy Solutions, which Walgreens acquired in 2006. Physicians Immediate Care operates 20 urgent care clinics in Illinois, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.
To further illustrate the convergence between urgent care and retailing, Stanley Blaylock, former president of Walgreens Health Services, is joining the company as president and chief executive officer. The financing will be used to expand the network and enhance the patient care offering of the clinics managed by Physicians Immediate Care LLC.
