MinuteClinic Opens In Asheville, NC
|
MinuteClinic has opened three walk-in clinics inside CVS/pharmacy stores in the Asheville, North Carolina area. The move marks a willingness by the top retail clinic operator to open in a market that is not one of the top 100 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) in the United States. Three additional clinics are expected to open by the end of the year in Brevard and Waynesville, two smaller nearby communities.
MinuteClinic launched its first medical clinics in North Carolina in 2005. The first North Carolina markets were Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham, both of which are top-50 MSAs. Greensboro and Winston/Salem came next, which are ranked within markets 51-100.
The move is significant because it shows MinuteClinic’s expansion plans are extending beyond the country’s largest cities to more distant communities. Brevard, for example, is a small city that is part college town and part retirement community. It is also significant because it bucks a trend of slower growth by other major retail clinic operators. MinuteClinic has no competition in North Carolina, with the exception of Raleigh/Durham, where Target Clinic just opened four clinics in late July.
MinuteClinic is expected to add 100 new clinics in 2012, part of a planned expansion of 500 or more clinics through 2015.
