Healthcare Audit Partner – Jeremy Zabel
Jeremy provides services solely to the health care industry. He has over 17 years of experience in providing advice, consultation, and audit services to health systems, hospitals, clinics and physician practices, behavioral health providers and other related organizations. In addition to audit and accounting matters, he has assisted clients with mergers, acquisitions, business line analysis, debt capacity and debt issuance, budgeting, feasibility studies, third-party reimbursement, and various other management decisions. Jeremy received a B.A. in accounting from Gustavus Adolphus College and is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA).
Healthcare Audit Senior Manager – Rick Kes
Rick has nearly eleven years of experience providing audit and consultative services predominately to organizations in the health care industry. He has served a wide variety of organizations ranging from large consolidated entities with more than $8 billion in annual revenue to small, stand-alone entities with less than $1 million in annual revenue. Rick is responsible for all aspects of audits, including planning, performance and necessary reporting. He will work with the audit team to develop audit program strategies, define key audit areas and assign staff to those areas as appropriate. Rick received a B.S. in accounting and finance from Minnesota State University – Mankato and is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA).
Healthcare Revenue Cycle Subject Matter Expert – Tina Hill
Tina specializes in leading revenue cycle projects, including outpatient clinical documentation improvement, charge capture, revenue integrity, coding, billing and CDM standardization. She has over 14 years of experience, including claims auditing with a large third party payer, director level industry experience and consulting experience with a Big Four firm. Tina is experienced in conducting outpatient operational assessments and improvement projects in all outpatient environments including clinic, urgent care, and hospital outpatient, including the emergency department. Her expertise focuses on educating providers on how to efficiently document and capture all charges for services rendered. In addition, she has built and trained hospital and physician revenue integrity teams for numerous organizations. She is a certified professional coder (CPC) and certified in Epic CDM Management. As a recognized revenue cycle expert, Tina has been published in the American Academy of Professional Coder’s monthly magazine, Healthcare Business Monthly, and spoke at their National Conference.

Dan has a proven track record in revenue cycle performance improvement and enhancing processes at all levels in both hospitals and physician groups. He has solid communication and negotiating skills. Dan has a passion for creating a high-performance environment that delivers outstanding, measurable results. Dan has performed a variety of specialized serves, including Revenue cycle performance improvement (front, middle, back) including revenue integrity program development; Management of multi-specialty physician organization(s); Hospital Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centers; Health system executive leadership; Physician compensation strategies, design and compliance; Operational assessments and transformational improvement designs for physician practices, hospitals, behavioral health, and long term care facilities; and Organizational development and critical staff training programs.
Valuation Subject Matter Expert – Matt Wolf
Matthew is a director with RSM’s Business Valuation Consulting group, specializing in health care providers and payors. Matt has 10 years of business valuation experience for a variety of purposes, including management planning and financial reporting, i.e. ASC 350/360, 718, 805, 820, and 958-805. This experience ranges across industries, but focuses on health care. His industry-specific experience and responsibilities include Financial reporting valuations related to business combinations, goodwill impairment, and stock compensation for health care providers and payers, including large health systems; Buy- and sell-side valuation of physician practices for purposes of complying with Stark and anti-kickback laws, under Full employment and Professional service agreement arrangements; and Joint venture consulting.
Healthcare Tax Subject Matter Expert – Eric Gidlow
Eric A. Gidlow is a Partner in the Minneapolis office of RSM. Eric spends his time providing tax and financial advice to for-profit healthcare related clients in the dental and health insurance industries, third party administrators, pharmacy benefit managers, and clinic management organizations. Eric has helped clinic management organizations with mergers and acquisitions, whether it be selling or buying, and helped with structuring issues involving operations and management services agreements, tax transactional due diligence, etc. Eric also provides tax, business and financial planning advice for corporate, partnership and individual clients in professional services (architectural and engineering, large advertising agencies, management of professional service locations), manufacturing/distribution, wholesale/retail, and the ethanol industry. Eric has administrative experience before the Internal Revenue Service and the Minnesota Department of Revenue.
Eric established the Upper Midwest’s cost segregation and historical rehabilitation credit practice and has practiced in this area since 1995. In this capacity, he is a technical advisor to a 10-member Central and Western Region cost segregation team as well as a periodic advisor to other regional practices around the country. He has been involved with in excess of 2,000 cost segregation studies.
Kevin Depew - Director of Thought Leadership, RSM US LLP
Kevin Depew is the director of thought leadership for RSM US LLP and an Emmy Award-winning writer and producer. Prior to joining RSM, Depew worked for Bloomberg LP, where he helped create the Bloomberg Brief economics newsletter and functions for the market. Depew was formerly the editor-in-chief of MV Media and has also worked for Dorsey Wright and Associates, PaineWebber and AG Edwards. His former roles include director of research, strategist, and analyst and portfolio manager. Depew attended St. John's College in Annapolis, MD and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a BA in Philosophy.
Introductions and the Urgent Care Industry - Tom Charland
Tom Charland. Mr. Charland is the founder and CEO of Merchant Medicine, LLC. He drives Merchant Medicine’s executive thought leadership, strategic planning, and operational engagements with health systems across the US. He is formerly SVP for Strategy and Business Development for MinuteClinic; Executive Director of National Association for Ambulatory Care (NAFAC); CEO Digital Cyclone (acquired by Garmin); Executive Director at Control Data Systems (acquired by British Telecom). In the last several years, he has been quoted regarding walk-in medicine in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Fox News, Dow Jones, and Bloomberg. He also speaks frequently on the subject at investment research meetings and hospital strategy conferences throughout the year. Mr. Charland received a BS in Communications from Boston University. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and the Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA).
Currently, Mr. Charland is a strategic advisor to several large health systems in the northeast, southeast, and midwest developing urgent care and retail clinic platforms.
Finance Leadership - Bernie Kuhn
Mr. Kuhn is a Principal and CFO with Merchant Medicine, LLC. He assists clients with growth and strategy planning, financial and operational performance, and real estate development. He was previously SVP for Corporate Development at Doctors Care in SC (52 urgent care centers, 21 physical therapy offices); he held a dual role as VP at parent insurer BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. Prior to BCBSSC, Mr. Kuhn was a Senior Manager in KPMG’s management consulting group with experience across health care, insurance, pharmaceuticals, and retail clients. He is a Six Sigma Green Belt and a PMP. Mr. Kuhn received a BA in Accounting at Michigan State University and an MBA at the University of Florida. He is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), and a prior speaker and practice management committee member for the Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA).
Currently, Mr. Kuhn is interim Chief Operating Officer (COO) for urgent care at a large health system in the mid-Atlantic, and interim CFO for its Direct to Consumer and Ambulatory Division. Prior to that he was an interim COO for a private urgent care group in Georgia with a health system affiliate.
Urgent Care Service Line Growth - Jason North
Mr. North is a Managing Director with Merchant Medicine, LLC. He brings 27 years of experience in operations, multi-site management, sales and marketing across retail, healthcare, and the urgent care sector. Mr. North was previously Vice President at MedExpress (part of Optum, a division of UnitedHealthcare). He oversaw operations for occupational medicine and employer programs across 168 clinic locations in 14 states. Prior experience includes Vice President for Urgent Care at TeamHealth with five urgent care and occupational medicine companies across 16 clinics in 4 states plus administrative operations, and Director of Operations at Concentra managing operational and financial performance of 15 centers in Florida and Georgia. Mr. North has a BA from Palm Beach Atlantic University. He is a faculty member of the Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA) presenting on finance and strategy.
Currently, Mr. North is leading a pediatrics service line development program for a large health system. Mr. North brings subject matter expertise on clinical staffing comparatives and center ranking/profiling. Mr. North until recently was a senior leader in a national payer-controlled urgent care operator, and brings insight into how best-in-class models can operate.
Urgent Care Operations - Tracy Patterson
Ms. Patterson is a Director with Merchant Medicine, LLC. She supports clients in all areas of center development, market analysis, financial analytics, compliance, ancillaries and performance improvement. Ms. Patterson joined national US urgent care chain NextCare Urgent Care in 1997, serving in multiple capacities as the organization grew exponentially. She managed nearly every area during her tenure, including the Business Office, Compliance, IT, Clinical Services (Lab, Radiology, Dispensing), Development and Operations. She was integral in the customization of NextGen to meet our needs and developed over 30 de novo or relocation sites. Ms. Patterson continues to lead these development projects with numerous health system and medical practice clients in a management services capacity. She is an active member of the Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA) and serves on its Practice Management Content Committee. She earned both an MBA and MHSA from Arizona State University and a BS in Accounting. Ms. Patterson is certified in healthcare compliance (CHC) through the Health Care Compliance Association.
Currently, Ms. Patterson is interim Chief Operating Officer (COO) for urgent care at a large northeastern health system, and advising on growth models for a separate large health system in a nearby geography. Prior to that she helped build an urgent care group for a health system in the mid-Atlantic.
Urgent Care Market Analysis and Development – Leah Broussard
Ms. Broussard is a Director with Merchant Medicine, LLC. She assists clients with development expertise, budgeting, contracting and vendor management, site location analysis, clinic layout/design, and marketing programs. She brings five years of direct hands-on experience in designing and building an urgent care operation. Most recently, Ms. Broussard was Director of Operations for MHM Urgent Care in New Orleans, Louisiana (acquired by Ochsner Health System in January 2017). She worked with MHM executive leadership to grow from concept to a regional chain of fully operational clinics. Ms. Broussard received her BS in Biology from Baylor University and MS in Health Care Management from the University of New Orleans.
Currently, Ms. Broussard is assisting in strategy design, site location analytics, payer and market analytics, and related competitive analysis for large health systems across the US as part of Merchant Medicine engagements.
