Tom Charland

Tom Charland

Mr. Charland is the founder and CEO of Merchant Medicine, LLC.  He drives Merchant Medicine’s executive thought leadership, strategic planning, and operational engagements with health systems across the US.  He is formerly SVP for Strategy and Business Development for MinuteClinic; Executive Director of National Association for Ambulatory Care (NAFAC); CEO Digital Cyclone (acquired by Garmin); Executive Director at Control Data Systems (acquired by British Telecom).  In the last several years, he has been quoted regarding walk-in medicine in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Fox News, Dow Jones, and Bloomberg.  He also speaks frequently on the subject at investment research meetings and hospital strategy conferences throughout the year.  Mr. Charland received a BS in Communications from Boston University.  He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and the Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA).

Bernie Kuhn

Bernie Kuhn

Bernie Kuhn is a Principal and CFO of Merchant Medicine, LLC. He assists clients with growth and real estate development, financial and operational improvements, employer programs, marketing, and transaction-related projects. Most recently he has lead engagements as an interim ambulatory executive for Banner Health and Inova. He was previously SVP for Corporate Development at Doctors Care in SC; he held a dual role as VP at parent insurer BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. Prior to BCBSSC, he was a Senior Manager in KPMG’s management consulting group with experience across health care, insurance, pharmaceuticals, and retail clients. Bernie received a BA in Accounting at Michigan State University and an MBA at the University of Florida. He is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), and a prior speaker and practice management committee member for the Urgent Care Association (UCA).

Anthony Zanotti

Anthony Zanotti is a Managing Director with Merchant Medicine, LLC. Mr. Zanotti brings experienced account executive focus in healthcare and health insurance, with a focus in consumer strategy, marketing communications, satisfaction-driven market research, analytics, and product development to clients. He provides clients with strategy, growth, and research across hospitals, health plans, retail pharmacies, pharmaceutical and medical device companies. Mr. Zanotti was previously Vice President of Sales, Health Plan Division, for Express Scripts, and Director, Healthcare for J.D. Power, with prior product development positions at Eli Lily. He is an avid wine and travel enthusiast, and owns a boutique import distributorship. Mr. Zanotti received a BS in Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan.

Tracy Patterson MBA, MHSA

Tracy Patterson MBA, MHSA

Ms. Patterson is a Director with Merchant Medicine, LLC. She supports clients in all areas of center development, market analysis, financial analytics, compliance, ancillaries and performance improvement. Ms. Patterson also serves in interim COO roles for Merchant Medicine clients. Ms. Patterson joined NextCare Urgent Care in 1997, serving in multiple leadership capacities as the organization grew exponentially. She managed nearly every area during her tenure, including the Business Office, Compliance, IT, Clinical Services (Lab, Radiology, Dispensing), Development and Operations. She was integral in the customization of NextGen to meet our needs and developed over 30 de novo or relocation sites. Ms. Patterson continues to lead these development projects with hospital and medical practice clients in a consulting capacity. She is an active member of the Urgent Care Association (UCA) and serves on its Practice Management Content Committee. She earned both an MBA and MHSA from Arizona State University and also holds a BS in Accounting. Ms. Patterson is certified in healthcare compliance (CHC) through the Health Care Compliance Association.

Shane Lacaillade, MHA, MBA, MS-PI

Shane Lacaillade, MHA, MBA, MS-PI

Shane Lacaillade is a Managing Director with Merchant Medicine, LLC. Mr. Lacaillade brings 28 years of leadership, management and consulting experience in private, public and government healthcare. As a senior executive, Mr. Lacaillade has extensive experience in human resource planning and operations, organizational change, team building, organizational effectiveness and facilitative leadership. He leads operational and organizational audits to align performance requirements with staffing plans and processes to enhance teamwork and productivity. Most recent experience includes COO for Graves Gilbert Clinic (Integrative Primary Care) in Kentucky, SVP of Operations for Doctors Care (Urgent Care) in South Carolina (UCI Medical Affiliates Inc.), and Director of Operations for Premise Health (Employer On-sites) in Tennessee. Prior to the private sector, Mr. Lacaillade served in U.S. Air Force clinical operations with multiple overseas deployments and has has held senior healthcare positions with the U.S. military culminating in his last position as the Executive Director for the Defense Medical Readiness Training Institute. Mr. Lacaillade holds both an MS in Performance Improvement and MHA from Grantham University, an MBA from American Military University, and a BS from the University of Phoenix. He is a member and conference presenter for the Urgent Care Association (UCA) and is active with the UCA telemedicine committee. He is a member of both the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).

Leah Broussard, MS

Ms. Broussard is a Senior Consultant with Merchant Medicine, LLC. She assists clients with center development expertise, budgeting, contracting and vendor management, site location analysis, clinic layout/design, and marketing programs. Ms. Broussard works with health systems and medical groups around the U.S. She brings over eight years of direct hands-on experience in designing and building an urgent care operation. Most recently, Ms. Broussard was Director of Operations for MHM Urgent Care in New Orleans, Louisiana, now part of Oschner health system (over twenty locations including dedicated Occupational Medicine sites). She worked with MHM executive leadership to grow from concept to a regional chain of fully operational clinics. Ms. Broussard received her BS in Biology from Baylor University and MS in Health Care Management from the University of New Orleans.

Yvette Harvieux

Ms. Harvieux is Client Services Manager at Merchant Medicine, LLC. She supports Merchant Medicine consulting engagements and data teams, coordinates Symposium and Product delivery, and drives marketing and IT functions.  She has been with Merchant Medicine since its formation.  She previously was Marketing and Software Specialist at NOW Care Medical Centers, Development Director at the National Association for Ambulatory Care (precursor to UCAOA), and a database specialist with McKesson Provider Technologies.  Ms. Harvieux has a BS from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

 

Suzanne Malausky

Suzanne Malausky is a Managing Director with Merchant Medicine, LLC. Mrs. Malausky brings organizational development expertise in healthcare, with a focus and expertise in leadership development, talent management, employee engagement, change management, and executive coaching. She provides clients with strategy, research and plan design for creating healthy work places that attract and retain the best talent and result in improved business performance. She is also Founder and President of WeInspireLLC. Mrs. Malausky’s prior experience includes Director of Culture and Talent Management at MedExpress (part of Optum / UnitedHealth’s national urgent care platform) and a Corporate Culture Facilitator at UnitedHealth Group. She served as Director for Talent Development at Highmark Health, one of the nation’s largest Blue Cross and Blue Shield organizations, with a focus on employee engagement and executive development. Mrs. Malausky is certified as an EverythingDiSC facilitator, and in the Hogan Personality Inventory and PROSCI Change Management processes. She received a BS in Communications from Ohio University and a certificate in Women in Leadership from Case Western Reserve University. Mrs. Malausky is a national member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and American Society for Healthcare Human Resource Administration (ASHRA) and member of the Pittsburgh chapters of Women for Economic and Leadership Development (WELD) and the National Speakers Association (NSA).

Mark VanderWerf is a Managing Director with Merchant Medicine, LLC. Mr. VanderWerf leads Merchant Medicine’s Telehealth Practice and helps healthcare systems and providers improve quality of care, scale efforts, reduce costs and grow revenue through virtual care services. He brings over 30 years of experience developing, marketing, selling, and deploying advanced healthcare solutions that span the care continuum and transform healthcare delivery. Most recently, he was CEO for Telehealth at Banner Health. As a recognized visionary thought leader, Mr. VanderWerf is a regular consultant and mentor to healthcare delivery interests and policy makers worldwide. He is the Founder and and former CEO of AMD Global Telemedicine and AMD Telehealth, served as Vice President of eHealth and Strategic Partnerships at Nonin Medical and managed New Ventures for Digital Equipment Corporation. Mr. VanderWerf served as a Board Member and Chairman of the Industry Council for American Telemedicine Association (ATA) and is an elected Fellow of the ATA. He is also a Founding Board Member of the International Society for Telemedicine and eHealth.

Harris Cohn

Mr. Cohn is Chief Development Officer with Merchant Medicine, LLC, and President of our affiliate Merchant Development, LLC. Merchant Development is owned by Merchant Medicine and Cohn Corporation. He works with clients to drive growth strategy and real estate development, facility design, and related investment alignment. His expertise in high performance build-to-suit portfolio expansion is used by leading urgent care and related multi-site operators. Over the past decade he has grown Cohn Corporation, into national real estate, construction, and services organization, with a broad emphasis on urgent care, primary care, dental, physical therapy, ambulatory surgery center, and related facility design, development, leasing, and property management. Prior to Cohn Corporation, Mr. Cohn was with Stockamp and Associates, acquired by Huron Consulting, as a senior consultant in financial and operational improvement services to hospitals, academic medical centers, and health systems. He is a Commissioner on the City of Columbia (South Carolina) Design and Development Review Commission (DDRC), and a board member for the South Carolina Philharmonic and Columbia Museum of Art. Mr. Cohn graduated Magna Cum Laude with at Vanderbilt University with a major in Human and Organization Development and a minor in Computer Science.

Jake Lewis

Jake Lewis

Jake Lewis is a Consultant with Merchant Medicine, LLC. Mr. Lewis works with Merchant Medicine clients to develop and grow urgent care operations as well as related service lines. He supports both management consulting and real estate development projects. Previously, he was Regional Sales Manager with Nephron Pharmaceuticals in management and business development across health systems, medical groups, hospitals, surgery centers, and urgent care operators. Mr. Lewis received an International Business Bachelor of Science at the College of Charleston.
